We’ll start with the obvious: It’s fast. And its design does nothing to dispel this idea. A sculpted aerodynamic profile for high-speed stability. Dual exhaust for an impressive appearance and sound, and drop-beltline rear windows allow for better over-the-shoulder visibility for the driver.
The exhaust system integrated with the rear diffuser sports dual chrome asymmetrical exhaust tips, and is engineered for the low-backpressure performance and sound you expect from a sport coupe. The 2.0T has a signature revving howl you might not expect; while the 3.8 V6 carries a deep authoritative rumble. Not only does the Coupe look the part, but it sounds the part too.
HID Xenon headlights cast bright white light, enhancing contrast and visibility while reducing eyestrain. A self-leveling feature maintains the lights’ optimal positioning, regardless of luggage and passenger weight. And with no physical filament to burn out, HID units last longer than conventional bulbs.
How did you live without it? The Proximity Key allows you to enter and start the car without removing the key from your pocket: Just open the door, push the start button and go. A transponder in the key knows exactly where it is and won’t let you lock it in the car. Pretty smart.
Take a seat. The first thing you’ll notice, you’re not cramped. A well-mapped-out driver’s cockpit tunes out distractions, and generous sport seat bolsters and a sport shift knob feel like they were made for you. Auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth®, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls aren’t just luxuries—they help you stay focused on the road ahead.
The standard stereo is anything but. The AM/FM/CD player with XM® Satellite Radio3, iPod®/USB comes with auxiliary input jacks. Controls are intuitive and within easy reach. The display is high on the instrument panel to reduce driving distraction. The optional Infinity® audio system includes premium speakers, external amplifier and subwoofer for clean, punchy sound.
The rear seat is designed for adults, not just children. Instead of three seats, our engineers used the available space to make sure it’s comfortable for two. The large, drop-beltline side windows give rear passengers a clear view, while large front door openings and a walk-in assist feature on the passenger’s side makes it easier to get in and out.
Typically, sport coupes sacrifice interior space for performance. Genesis Coupe bucks tradition with generous head and shoulder room for both the front and rear seat passengers, and 10 feet of cargo space ensures you’ll never have to decide between golf clubs or your friend’s luggage.
With its powerful rear-wheel drive design, the Genesis Coupe has performance in its DNA. Add the ultra-rigid unibody chassis, sport-tuned suspension, Torsen® limited-slip differential, 19-inch gunmetal finish alloy wheels, and Brembo braking system, and there’s no doubt this is a purpose-built sport coupe.
The safety benefits of unibody construction are well documented, but its effect on handling and dynamic response cannot be overstated. A strong, steel chassis gives the suspension a stable platform to help keep you in contact with the road, for more responsive control and simultaneously dampens unpleasant vibrations that would otherwise resonate through the cabin.
We scrutinized some of the world’s finest coupes before developing our sport-tuned and track-tuned suspension calibrations. All models feature dual-pivot front struts for more precise steering, and a 5-link rear suspension for optimal grip over uneven road surfaces and during extreme lateral loads. Plus, gas-pressurized shock absorbers assure firm, consistent control even during spirited driving. The Track and R-Spec models feature track-tuned spring, damper, and stabilizer bar settings that satisfy the most demanding enthusiast. Track and R-Spec models also feature higher performance Brembo® brakes, a Torsen® limited-slip differential for better control and acceleration out of tight corners and sticky, staggered fitment performance tires on 19-inch gunmetal-finish alloy wheels.
The Genesis Coupe comes standard with a close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission for both turbo and V6 models. 2.0T models have an available 5-speed automatic. And 3.8 models offer a 6-speed automatic engineered by the transmission experts at ZF®. This gearbox design is shared with some of the world’s most impressive (and least affordable) performance coupes. If you opt for the automatic, you also get the highly responsive SHIFTRONIC® paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
The turbocharged, intercooled 2.0-liter engine with Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing balances everyday driving efficiency with generous low-rpm torque. Unlike traditional turbos, it works best at everyday driving speeds and is designed to run on regular unleaded fuel. The beefy 306-hp 3.8-liter V6 has Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing and a Variable Intake System for both low-end torque and high-end power. The V6 engine has a high performance intake and exhaust system, for more power at all engine speeds, responsive free-revving character and a throaty rumble.
Some might purchase the Coupe based on its looks alone, and, well, that’s okay. But a sophisticated safety structure beginning with its high-strength steel frame, strategically-placed crumple zones, and side-impact door beams make its safety features as compelling as its looks.
Electronic Stability Control and Traction Control together are nothing less than revolutionary. These active safety features help ensure that both understeer and oversteer are kept in check in a variety of driving conditions, performing hundreds of calculations per second to reduce wheelspin or skidding. If widely deployed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration projects ESC could potentially save 10,000 lives a year.
Even the best drivers can do little to avoid rear-end collisions. Hyundai has included active front head restraints that move forward and up during a rear impact, helping to reduce the effects of potential whiplash. The restraint mechanism uses body weight alone to react in a collision, making it simple, yet extremely reliable.
